Using the internet, find three interesting facts about Egyptian pharoahs. I only have two requirements for this assignment. One, it must be information that I cannot find in the textbook. Two, you must list the name of the website you found that information on. I am really excited to see what you find!!

January 14th, 2008 at 8:50 pmSehetepibre was a man who had served under Senusret I during the Middle Kingdom period. On his funerary Stela he wanted to show praise and loyalty to his king, in this “hymn” style, by naming the King as equivalent to the gods.

The achievements of the Greeks in the ancient world, by no means few, may have reached their peak in the city of Alexandria. No less a ruler than its namesake, Alexander III of Macedonia (Alexander the Great), Alexandria dominated the eastern Mediterranean world culturally, politically, and economically for more than nine hundred years, the latter three hundred of which it competed with even the eastern capital of the Byzantine Empire, the famous Constantinople.

January 14th, 2008 at 8:53 pmOne of the facts was that the earliest ancient Egyptians buried their dead in small pits in the desert. The heat and dryness of the sand dehydrated the bodies quickly, creating lifelike and natural ‘mummies’.The seccond fact that I found was that over many centuries, the ancient Egyptians developed a method of preserving bodies so they would remain lifelike. The process included embalming the bodies and wrapping them in strips of linen. Today we call this process mummification. The third fact that I found was that the Egyptians began burying their dead in coffins to protect them from wild animals in the desert. However, they realised that bodies placed in coffins decayed when they were not exposed to the hot, dry sand of the desert. Those were the three facts that I found.

January 14th, 2008 at 10:51 pmThe ancient pharaohs were not called that by the Egyptians. They got it from Hebrews and Greeks. There were also probably kings who ruled regions of Egypt before recorded history, and in fact, several ancient historians record legendary Pharaohs who became Egyptian gods. Egyptian culture disappeared about nearly two thousand years ago. A long time ago they would use the name Pharaoh for their palaces or houses but then it was used to call the kings of Egypt. This what I found in thee internet.

Ancient Egyptian pharaohs were considered to be both divine deities as well as mortal rulers. Throughout the 30+ dynasties in ancient Egyptian history, it is speculated that some 170 or more rulers reigned over the great land of Egypt during a three thousand year time span. The throne of Egypt was primarily intended to be succeeded from father to son, however in many cases this line of kingship was interrupted by murder, mayhem and mysterious disappearances.

1) Parts of a temple dating to the reign of pharaoh Ramses II have been discovered inside a mosque in Luxor, Egypt, officials report (see map). Experts restoring the historic mosque uncovered sections of columns, capitals, and elaborately inscribed relief’s from one of the ancient temple’s courtyards built around 1250 B.C. The previously concealed architectural elements reveal well-preserved hieroglyphics and unique scenes depicting the powerful pharaoh. The discovery is likely to touch a nerve among religious leaders, because the newly exposed relief’s contain representations of humans and animals, which are forbidden inside mosques, the experts said. The mosque was erected as a shrine to Muslim saint Abul Haggag in the 13th century A.D. on the site of an earlier Christian church, which was itself built on top of the ancient temple, the archaeologists explained

(2) Pharaoh was a name for the office of kingship in the New Kingdom of ancient Egypt. Meaning “Great House”, it originally referred to the king’s palace, but the meaning loosened over the course of Egyptian history until it became interchangeable with the Egyptian word for king. Although the rulers of Egypt were generally male, the pharaoh was used on the rare occasions when a female ruled. Such rulers were believed to be the incarnation of Horus.[1]

(3) Tut is widely famous because his tomb was one of the few tombs discovered with its treasures intact. Not much is known about Tut because he was related (not sure if he was a son or brother) to Akhenaten who was a pharaoh that the Egyptian people considered a heretic since he tried to change their religion. Tutankhamen means “living image of Auman” and Auman was considered to be the creator god. Nowadays we call him King Tut for short and he is also known as the boy king. King Tut became a ruler at the age of nine when his 25 year old father died. He married his half-sister Ankhesenamun but had no surviving children. A postmortem determined he died at the age of 18 and was 1.65 m (5 ft 5in) tall. No one is certain of the cause of death. Reports indicate a blow to the head, an accident or murder??

The Old Kingdom is perhaps best known, however, for the large number of pyramids, which were constructed at this time as pharaonic burial places. For this reason, the Old Kingdom is frequently referred to as “the Age of the Pyramids.”The Middle Kingdom is the period in the history of ancient Egypt stretching from the establishment of the Eleventh Dynasty to the end of the Fourteenth Dynasty, roughly between 2030 BC and 1640 BC. I found this information in the wikipedia the free ENCYCLOPEDIA at yahoo.com.

Soon after becoming a pharaoh of Egypt,Akhenaten discarded his royal name and loyalty to Amon.He turned away from old priests and began the cult of the sun disk–the Aten.

January 15th, 2008 at 1:02 amEgypt is the cradle of civilization, the beacon of religion and the gateway to Africa. Cairo is the foremost capital on the African continent and lies at the centre of all routes leading to, and from the capitals of the three continents: Asia, Africa and Europe.
Egypt, for over fifty centuries, engendered the development of culture and civilization: Pharaonic (Pharonic), Christian and Islamic; and all during those long years, has generously contributed in the history and treasures of man-kind.
